2023/2024
2 HECTARES OF NEW LAND, AGRONOMIST & ONGOING LAND MAINTENANCE
Cocagi, Rwanda
In 23/24 we continue our support of the female farming cooperative of Cocagi. This year they wanted to increase their land holdings, so we have funded the purchase of an additional 2 hectares of land (taking the total of land purchased for them 8 hectares of land which is just shy of 20 acres). As important as new land is, there is significant investment required to support the maintenance and upkeep of the land which we also fund. As part of this we also support with the purchase of organic manure, compost making, erosion control, weeding, mulching and pruning.
To continually invest in the ongoing training and education of the farmer, we fund 2 Agronomists helping the farmers to work in better cohesion with the land, work to handle issues that come as part of climate change and learning how to work with the land and not erode the surrounding environment.
The plantation is a significant walk and the cooperative needs to hire additional seasonal workeers to support them throughout the year to maintain the land.
By providing them funds to bring in additional workers, it is also providing an income to the wider community. To date, the project has provided an additional 16,000 people with work, showing that support at origin, has a much wider impact on the community as a whole.
Tune in to our socials to stay up-to-date with the projects and how your support is having a positive impact.
